Nowhere to go but up!
That’s how it has played out in each of the lush 16sf Somerville City Hall vegetable beds. Luckily, the beans, cucumbers and pumpkins are thrilled to climb, so we are building string trellises for them to scale the City Hall lamp posts. When you are a novice gardener, it’s hard to know which plants are vines and then which will grab onto string vs bamboo vs metal cages. Here is a great link explaining the meaning of magical words like “tendrils”, “adhesive pads” and “clinging roots.” If a magical bean stalk emerges that allows us to climb into a land of giants (think Fee-fi-fo-fum!), we’ll surely issue a press release. l
